Charles Gerding Obituary

Charles Henry Gerding, 87, of Avon Lake, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2024 at Ames Family Hospice House in Westlake.  He was born in Cleveland on January 25, 1937.  Charles, affectionately known as “Chuck”, lived a life marked by kindness and generosity.  He graduated from West Tech High School in Cleveland in 1955, and soon thereafter enlisted in the US Army and served his country with pride and distinction.  Upon his discharge from the Army, Chuck spent most of his working years as a truck driver, and retired in 1999.  He spent many years contributing to his community and was a dedicated member of the United Church of Christ in Avon Lake.  Chuck maintained his fitness with almost daily walks or swims until his mid-80’s.  He was an avid and accomplished bowler and golfer and a lifelong passionate fan of Cleveland’s professional sports teams, especially the Browns.  Above all, his greatest joy was the time he spent with family and friends.  Chuck is survived by: his loving wife, Cheryl (nee Heiner); his son, Chuck (Randy Conaway-Gerding); the Charboneau step-children, Douglas (Bambi), Lee (Tami), Eric (Katy), Chris (Amy), and Michele (Bill) Feather; six grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, Tom Kilbane.  His family will fondly remember his warm heart, and the love and laughter that he shared with those around him.  They will also especially miss his Thanksgiving turkey carving skills! He was preceded in death by: his parents, Clarence and Hazel (nee Paulitsky) Gerding; his brother, Donald (the Late Bernice); and his sister, Carol Kilbane.  A private committal service for the family will be held at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville.
