Doris W. Gatzke

August 22, 1925 ~ September 28, 2020 (age 95)


Doris W. Gatzke (nee Stein), 95, of Elyria, whose love of travel gave her one final trip to the gates of Heaven, to meet her Lord and Savior, Jesus on Monday, September 28, 2020. She was born in Havana, Ohio on August 22, 1925 to Cora and Adolf Stein. She was raised in Monroeville, Ohio and lived much of her life in Cleveland, Ohio. Doris lived her last eight years in Elyria with her husband and daughter. She graduated from Monroeville High School in 1943. During WWII, Doris worked throughout the US for Western Union, with final placement in Cleveland, Ohio, where she met the love of her life, George Gatzke. She worked as a Secretary in several offices and retired from Concordia Lutheran Church in Independence, Ohio. Doris enjoyed: bowling, golfing, dancing, crocheting, playing cards, spending time with family and friends, and traveling. Doris and George visited all 50 states, and traveled abroad, visiting Canada numerous times, Mexico, Europe, and they took many cruises. She is survived by: her daughter, Gayle Gatzke of Elyria; her daughter-in-law, Kathy Gatzke of St. Charles, Missouri; two grandsons, Christopher (Abbey) and Jonathon (Christie) of the St. Louis area; her sister, Helen Eby; and by many nieces and nephews. Doris was preceded in death by: her husband of 67 years, George Gatzke; her son Timothy D. Gatzke; and by her sibblings, Verneita Schneider, and Edgar Stein. Due to COVID-19 services will be postponed until the Summer of 2021 with a Celebration of Life. A private burial will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery, in Twinsburg, Ohio. Rev. Laurie Miller of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elyria will officiate.
