John A. Holt, 93, went home to be with the Lord at his daughter’s residence in Vermilion, on Thursday May 26, 2022 following a short illness. He was born December 5, 1928 in Mexico, Maine. John had resided in Lorain County over 50 years, formerly living in Sheffield Lake, North Ridgeville and Elyria. He was a veteran, served in the US Marines and was honorably discharged in 1947. John moved to Cleveland in 1950 and attended Baptist Bible Institute in Cleveland for two years. He was employed by the Ford Motor Company in Brook Park and retired after 32 years of service. John was a faithful member of Church of the Open Door in Elyria where he served as an usher and a Sunday school leader. He was a former member of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church in Lorain and Midview Baptist Church in Grafton. John was a well-known volunteer at Elyria Memorial Hospital for many years. He enjoyed golfing and he found great comfort and joy in listening to hymns and gospel music. John A. Holt is survived by: two daughters, Sandra Crawford (Dennis) of Vermilion and Jennifer Knighten of Amherst; his son, Thomas Holt (Jacqueline) of Lorain; five grandchildren, Dennis Crawford Jr. (Julie), Ricky Crawford, Matthew Thompson (Colleen), Ben Knighten (Dinene) and Lauren Holt (Nick Baldwin); and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: his first wife, Ethel (nee Clark); his second wife, Evalee (nee Sloan); his son-in-law, Paul Knighten; his parents, Merton R. and Daisey Bell (nee Ruff) Holt; two sisters, Barbara Hayes and Eleanor Dent; and two brothers, Raymond and Donald Holt. The family will receive friends on Tuesday May 31, 2022 from 4-7pm at the Liston Funeral Home, 36403 Center Ridge Rd., (at Stoney Ridge Rd.), North Ridgeville. The funeral service will be Wednesday at 10:30am at the funeral home. Pastor Bob Wickens from Church of the Open Door will officiate. Burial will be private at Sunset Memorial Park in North Olmsted where members of the honor guard from VFW Post #9871 in North Ridgeville will conduct military honors. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the missions fund at Church of the Open Door in Elyria.
