John V. MacKay, 58, of Elyria, passed away suddenly on December 13, 2025 in Syracuse, New York. John was born on October 11, 1967 in Lakewood and had been an Elyria resident for many years. He was raised in North Ridgeville and was a 1986 graduate of North Ridgeville High School. John worked as a locomotive engineer for CSX Transportation for over 20 years. He was an active member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen. John’s family and friends meant everything to him and he will be fondly remembered by many. John MacKay is survived by: his wife, Debra (nee Miller); his son, Collin MacKay; his mother-in-law, Dora Miller; two sisters, Eileen MacKay-Nixon (Dan), and Maureen Karp (Greg); his brother, Patrick MacKay (Tammy); his nephew, Sean MacKay and his niece, Sarah Panigutti (Cory). He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Paula (nee McNeil) MacKay. Services will be private. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers and in honor of John, memorial contributions be made to PEP Prentiss Autism Center at pepcleve.org/support-us or by check sent to Positive Education Program, 3100 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44115. Liston Funeral Home, North Ridgeville, is serving the family.
