Sybil Larcey Obituary

Sybil Lea McNamara Larcey, 93, of Catawba Island and formerly of Rocky River and North Ridgeville, OH, passed away on February 2, 2020 at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton, OH. Sybil was born on July 25, 1926, in Lakewood, OH, to T. Edward and Sybil Blossom (Davis) McNamara. She graduated from Lakewood High School in 1944. She was a Pi Beta Phi at Ohio State University where she studied nursing. While there, she met Richard D. Larcey. They were married on July 10, 1948. The couple raised their family in Rocky River, where Richard owned and operated Westgate Animal Hospital on Center Ridge Rd.  Sybil devoted much of her time to the program she credited for saving her life, Alcoholics Anonymous. She was a respected, dedicated and grateful member for 55 years, helping countless others in the program. She worked closely with Sr. Nancy Jean who formed Hope House in the early 1970s, the first rehabilitation home in Cleveland for women struggling with chemical dependency, at Alcohol Services of Cleveland, and later as a chemical dependency counselor at St. John West Shore Serenity Hall.  She and her beloved sister Gerry won awards for being outstanding volunteer advocates for a battered women shelter.

The two also owned a lakefront cottage on Put-in-Bay for many years. Sybil enjoyed spending time with her family, antiquing, traveling, gardening and spending time in nature.  She loved taking long walks, especially on the beach where she collected shells, beach glass and other treasures. She was very creative and made beautiful things with these treasures. Sybil was a big gift giver and loved giving handmade creations. Sybil moved to Catawba Island in 2015. Sybil was the beloved mother of  sons Dale (Debra) Larcey of Medina, Barry (Holly) of Catawba Island, and Doug (Rita) of Astoria, NY, and daughters Kendra (Jeff) Koehler of Put-in-Bay, and Mary Kay (Don) Lawson of Avon Lake; grandmother of Jennifer Larcey of Euclid, Brian (Claire) Larcey of Chicago, Kara Larcey of Colorado, Sharon Larcey of Michigan, Griffin Larcey of Toledo, Jonathan (Lauren) Larcey of Long Island, George and Michael Larcey of Astoria, NY, Barry (Phoebe) Koehler and Caroline (Scott) Jackson of Put-in-Bay, and Christopher and Ryan Lawson of Seattle, WA;  great-grandchildren Julia Larcey, Piper, Teddy and Greta Koehler, and Liesl and Cal Jackson; brothers Ted (Marilyn) McNamara of Rocky River, and Robert McNamara of Cleveland; and aunt of many nephews and nieces. A family memorial celebration will be held at a later date.
